In recent years, heated tobacco products (HTPs) have gained significant attention worldwide. As alternatives to traditional cigarettes, these devices heat rather than burn tobacco, aiming to provide users with a similar experience while potentially reducing the of certain harmful substances.

What Are Heated Tobacco Devices?

Heated tobacco devices utilize heating technology to release nicotine and flavor compounds from tobacco without combustion. By maintaining the temperature at approximately 350°C, these devices operate below the burning point of tobacco (over 600°C). This method avoids the combustion process, which can reduce the formation of harmful substances like tar and carbon monoxide.

The Heating Principle of IQOS

IQOS is a heated tobacco device developed by Philip Morris International. Its core technology includes:

  • Heating Element: The device features a precisely engineered heating blade or rod, typically made of ceramic or metal, capable of rapidly reaching the desired temperature.
  • Temperature Control: IQOS maintains an accurate temperature of around 350°C, sufficient to vaporize nicotine and flavor compounds without burning the tobacco.
  • Specialized Tobacco Sticks: Using specially designed tobacco sticks, the device heats the tobacco to produce an aerosol for users to inhale.

Differences Between E-Cigarettes and Heated Tobacco Devices

While both e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices are considered alternatives to traditional smoking, they operate differently:

  • E-Cigarettes: These devices heat an e-liquid—usually containing nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavorings—to produce an aerosol. They do not contain actual tobacco.
  • Heated Tobacco Devices: These devices directly heat tobacco products to release nicotine and flavor compounds.

Variety of Flavors to Meet Different Needs

The market offers a wide range of flavors for both heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes, including traditional tobacco, menthol, fruit, and more, catering to various user preferences. For customers requiring small quantities, many brands provide door-to-door delivery, ensuring convenience and efficiency.
